AVX MediaNews, Announcements, and Interesting Tid-Bits

While working on a project recently, I bumped into the need to have a large list of business categories for our client’s customers to choose from when setting up a profile.  After much searching I could not find any simple (and free) listing of business categories for download that was comprehensive enough for my needs.  So I set out to compile my own list from several resources and documents I found around the internet.  In the end, this list ended up being over 580 records long!  Comprehensive?  perhaps not, but certainly thorough enough to meet my current needs.

To throw a bone to fellow developers and help you avoid my pain, here is the list I compiled for you to freely download and use:

I created the list initially as an Excel file  (Included in the .zip archive available for download above), then imported it into a MySQL database and exported it again to a SQL file, (Also included in the .zip archive) that will create the table and import all records automatically (Made with PHPMyAdmin Export).  You can easily add records to this file if you discover business categories that are missing.  What I am offering to you is merely a starting point you can use to save time in your own projects.   I will update the archive over time to reflect my most current lists, as I’m sure I will find omissions, errors, or organizational flaws that need to be corrected as I work more and more with the data set.

We are proud to announce that a new web site has gone live for Precision Lock & Key in Maryville, MO.  We have been working closely with this client to fine tune the wording and design elements, and have recently launched it into the wild.

Feedback so far has been overwhelmingly positive, and after only one week the site already appears on the first page of results (twice) for the important Google search term “Maryville MO Locksmith.”  As SEO is an important part of this web site’s strategy, we are continually tweaking elements, building links, and focusing on key words and phrases throughout the site to earn that coveted top search spot.

We were approached by Precision Lock & Key because they realized that a large portion of their clientele use the Internet now to find services rather than the phone book.  With yellow page ads decreasing in effectiveness, they needed an attractive, informative web presence in order to be visible and relevant to the new generation of Internet info-seekers.
